If I were to turn off the location, incase I lost my phone, I won’t be able to track it. Any solution?
Some apps need location permission to function, like the “find my phone” feature and driving apps like Google Maps or Waze, but many other apps ask for location permission as a default when installing even though they don’t need it. You can check your apps permissions settings and deny location permission for apps like camera (where embedded location info has been used to track address locations when people post pictures or videos of pets, kids, etc.)to improve security without compromising functionality of apps that actually need location permission.
Hi there,
I have set Firefox to only allow Zoom and MS Teams to access my web cam. All other apps are blocked.
Do I still need to cover my webcam?
Thanks!
While unknowingly giving apps permission to access your camera is the greatest risk here, the secondary risk is hackers gaining access, which in theory could override permissions. Then again, these are all just suggestions; assess your own risk levels to decide what you’re comfortable with.
From my experience, although its on a webcam to webcam basis, it’s yes to at least some of them. I know that Logitech cams can have their lights turned off through REGEDIT (the registry editor). With that logic, it’s no stretch of the imagination to get other USB or even integrated laptop webcams to turn on without any kind of notification.
As for my personal opinion on the matter (and as with anyone’s opinion on the internet, take it with a colossal grain of salt), covering a webcam when not in use is easy, cheap, and one of those “better safe than sorry” kind of things. Even if it’s just a little piece of electrical tape over the camera, its a solution that costs pennies and takes seconds to implement, so that’s a no brainer for me at least. And it’s not like I’m doing a bunch of nefarious stuff in front of my computer, nor do I think hackers would target me specifically for anything, but on the off chance that something like that happens, nobody needs to see me scratching my butt wearing pajamas at noon or something.
This is a big help, I have had those very scammers try to get my information. Thank you for your help. I would
